Getting Started

Getting ready for a cosmetic surgery procedure can feel overwhelming. It might be unclear how to begin or what the outcomes will be. Our aim is to provide you with the necessary tools and guidance to approach your cosmetic enhancement experience with assurance and safety.

In the early stages of planning for your procedure, it’s important to equip yourself with knowledge, mentally and physically prepare, pose pertinent questions, and grasp the expected processes and outcomes throughout the course of your surgery.

Getting Started Checklist

  1. Research Qualified Surgeons:

    • Find board-certified plastic surgeons with experience in the specific procedure you are considering.
    • Read reviews and check before-and-after photos of previous patients.
  2. Initial Consultation:

    • Schedule a consultation to discuss your goals, expectations, and any concerns.
    • Ask about the surgeon’s experience, the procedure details, and recovery expectations.
  3. Medical Evaluation:

    • Undergo a comprehensive medical evaluation to assess your suitability for surgery.
    • Discuss any existing medical conditions or medications with your surgeon.
  4. Financial Planning:

    • Obtain a detailed cost estimate for the procedure, including surgeon’s fees, anesthesia, facility costs, and any post-surgery necessities.
    • Check if your insurance covers any part of the procedure or if financing options are available.
  5. Pre-Operative Instructions:

    • Follow specific pre-surgery instructions provided by your surgeon to ensure the best outcome. This might include dietary restrictions, medication adjustments, or cessation of smoking.
  6. Prepare for Recovery:

    • Arrange for someone to drive you home after surgery and help during the initial recovery period.
    • Prepare your recovery area with essentials such as ice packs, comfortable pillows, and easy-to-reach necessities.
  7. Mental Preparation:

    • Consider the emotional aspects of undergoing surgery; it’s important to have realistic expectations and a support system in place.
  8. Post-Operative Care:

    • Understand the aftercare and follow-up appointments necessary to monitor your recovery and results.
    • Stock up on recommended supplies, such as bandages and ointments.

Is Plastic Surgery Right For Me?

Considering Your Desires and Expectations:

  • Am I unhappy with a specific aspect of my appearance that significantly impacts my self-esteem or quality of life? (Plastic surgery should be pursued to address genuine concerns, not to chase unrealistic ideals.)
  • Have I tried non-surgical alternatives to achieve my desired outcome? (Consider exercise, diet, skincare, or non-invasive cosmetic procedures before resorting to surgery.)
  • Do I have realistic expectations about the outcome of surgery? (Understand that surgery can improve, but not necessarily perfect, your appearance. There will still be scars and signs of aging.)
  • Am I comfortable accepting that some results might be permanent or irreversible? (Plastic surgery results are often long-lasting, so be sure you’re comfortable with the potential outcome.)

Assessing Your Physical and Mental Wellbeing:

  • Am I in good overall health? (Underlying medical conditions can increase surgical risks and hinder healing.)
  • Do I have a healthy weight? (Being at a stable, healthy weight is generally recommended before surgery.)
  • Am I a smoker? (Smoking can significantly slow healing and increase complication risks. Quitting well in advance is typically recommended.)
  • Am I prepared to commit to the recovery process? (Recovery often involves pain, swelling, and limitations on daily activities. Be sure you can dedicate time and effort to proper healing.)
  • Am I emotionally stable and prepared to handle the potential psychological effects of surgery? (Consider the possibility of disappointment or the need for adjustment after surgery.)

Financial Considerations:

  • Can I afford the surgery and all associated costs? (This includes surgeon fees, anesthesia, facility charges, medication, and aftercare.)
  • Will my insurance cover any part of the procedure? (Most insurance plans don’t cover cosmetic surgery unless medically necessary.)
  • Do I have a financial safety net in case of unexpected complications? (Surgery can sometimes lead to unforeseen costs.)

Choosing the Right Doctor and Procedure:

  • Have I researched qualified plastic surgeons with experience in the specific procedure I’m considering? (Board certification and experience are crucial.)
  • Have I scheduled consultations with multiple surgeons to discuss options and get a feel for their bedside manner? (Finding a surgeon you trust and feel comfortable with is important.)
  • Have I thoroughly discussed the risks, benefits, and potential complications of the procedure with my doctor? (Don’t hesitate to ask questions and clarify any doubts.)
  • Am I comfortable with the surgeon’s proposed surgical plan and their answers to my questions? (Feeling confident and informed about the surgery is essential.)

Taking Time to Decide:

  • Am I rushing into this decision due to emotional distress or temporary dissatisfaction? (Wait until you’re in a stable and clearheaded space to make a well-considered choice.)
  • Have I given myself enough time to research, reflect, and discuss the decision with loved ones? (Don’t feel pressured to rush into surgery. Take your time to be certain.)
How Do I Know What Aesthetic Procedure Is Best For Me?

Consider Your Goals and Concerns:

  • What aspects of your appearance do you wish to improve? Is it wrinkles, sagging skin, body fat deposits, or something else?
  • What are your desired outcomes? Do you want a more youthful look, a more defined body shape, or enhanced facial features?
  • Non-surgical vs. Surgical: Reflect on whether you’d prefer non-invasive treatments (fillers, Botox) or are open to surgical procedures (facelift, liposuction) for a more dramatic correction.

Research Potential Options:

  • Research procedures that address your concerns. Start with a general search online, but prioritize reputable sources like the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery or the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD: https://www.aad.org/).
  • Explore different options: There can be multiple procedures that address similar concerns. Research each option thoroughly to understand how they work, the expected results, and potential drawbacks.

Consult a Qualified Professional:

  • Schedule consultations with board-certified dermatologists or plastic surgeons. These consultations are crucial for personalized advice.
  • Discuss your goals and concerns with the doctor. Be open and honest about your desired outcomes and any reservations you might have.
  • Ask questions: Don’t hesitate to inquire about the procedure, risks, recovery process, and expected costs.

Key Factors During Consultation:

  • The doctor will assess your unique anatomy and aesthetic concerns. This helps determine which procedures are most suitable for you.
  • A realistic treatment plan will be discussed. The doctor will explain what each procedure can realistically achieve and tailor a plan to your specific goals.
  • Before-and-after photos can be helpful. Viewing results on patients with similar concerns can provide a better understanding of potential outcomes.
